  Welcome to the Wildwoods!
Posted by: Spirit of Wildwood - Apr 01, 2014, 04:02 AM - Forum: News Desk - No Replies

[dohtml]

Happy April RoWers! Grab up a chair (if you're not already in one) and sit tight 'cause we've got lots in store for you now that Spring is on the rise! Here's a rundown of things to expect:

Word Count Changes

Concerning word count, we would like to announce that threads be 250 words or less - perfect, now, for spree threads!

Breeding Season & Puppies

As Breeding Season has come to a close, we would like to announce that due to the low number of applications and the conditions pertaining to the next item on the agenda, no puppies will be up for adoption this season.

Board Theme Shift!

And now for the fun part that you've all probably been wondering about! The Staff of RoW has started to become bored of playing wolves and have come to a consensus that we are changing our focus at Ruins of Wildwood. Welcome to the NEW Ruins of Wildwood: A Semi-Realistic Vampire & Werewolf RPG. As such, please wrap up your threads as wolf characters, and prepare for our new story line:

We would additionally like to direct you to the new part of the boards - "Wildwood, New Jersey" - where the urban setting takes place; and to help our players and their characters "change over" to the new theme, we have a few writing prompts for you to enjoy! Because this is such a special event and we want to encourage activity, anyone who completes a thread with their new shape-shifted character will receive +100 development points for completing an RE as well as a fancy new ribbon. We would also like to note that you are welcome to decide for yourself whether your character is a vampire, werewolf, or a mortal...

BITTEN!
Your character has awoken on the morning of a new day... somewhere in the middle of the city. But what is this? As soon as they sit up they realize that their neck is coated in fresh blood... It is up to you to decide what happens next, whether they seek cover somewhere dark or make use of the daylight hours as they search for answers as to what happened the night before.

THIRST FOR BLOOD
The harsh winter has left you and your comrades lean, hungry, and near-starvation. Instincts and painful hunger pangs require your character to react accordingly, whether it be hunting or scavenge in the wilderness, using the last bit of money in their pockets for a drink or a meal, or follow a terrified youth down Swift Street leading into the middle of the city...

JUST ANOTHER SATURDAY NIGHT...
Your character has just woken up in their corresponding local werewolf or vampire "hang out" - the Slaughtered Lamb or Viktor's Demise. It seems they have just passed out for a few hours, and the barkeep or overseer isn't happy... Do they stay there or make themselves scarce? Did they pay their tab? Why had they gone there in the first place?

CARNIVAL TOWN
Round 'n' round; carousel has got you under it's spell... The ruins of the Wildwood Boardwalk has become the central hub for mortal, vampire, and werewolf alike, but the rides no longer work and it has been nearly a decade since the park was fully functional. Something - or someone - has brought your character there...

CUB SCOUT
Werewolves, a quick prowl around your territory - in werewolf form - has you on edge. Someone has gone amiss... but it doesn't occur to you who has gone missing until you notice a small teddy bear on the ground. This, without question, belongs to one of the pack's cubs! Picking it up, you examine it closely; it reeks of death and old blood. A vampire has just been where you stood... and a youngster might be in danger.

POSSESSION
Vampires, the sun has finally come to set, but something is missing! Check all your pockets, check your bag, search your room or the place where you've napped during the day... What was taken? You're bound to find out soon enough, but the first clue you're left with is the scent of werewolf that seems to circle around you...

SUPERNATURAL
Your character realizes that the drastic changes - both the small and the prominent ones - that have taken place have changed them... for life. Write how they have come to this conclusion or have come to believe that being something akin to a werewolf or a vampire is either a monstrous curse or a well-earned gift.

Concerning Leaders

As apart of this new theme, we would like to address the new Leaders of Relic Lore. If we have misunderstood your character (it has occurred to us that it would seem like most Tainn's are werewolves!) please feel free to contact the Spirit of Wildwood with a correction:

Naira & Edmund Mapplethorpe.

Deep within the Ghastly Woods, husband and wife duo - Naira and Mapplethorpe - have made their home and headquarters. For centuries they have captured, enslaved, and raised werewolves of a more vicious and primal nature. Their stance in this longstanding war between races has rendered them almost untouchable as their wealth in old money (both his and her companies and their share in investments) subdue their power-hungry inferiors with riches and their abilities in sicking their werewolf pack against any who dare to rebel against them keep them well-protected.

Elettra Archer & Angier Lyall.

Vampire magnate Elettra Archer - and her newly-turned-vampire mate, Angier Lyall - are on the other end of the spectrum as their coven is solely made of their own kind, including her once-mortal children - Asriel, Sköll, and Morganna. While no qualms have sprung up just yet from the sudden increase in the number of werewolf packs, both Elettra and Angier have fortified the lands of the Willow Ridge Estate through their allegiance with their neighbors, Whisper Coven and the Order of Secrets.

Nina Hervok.

The Leader of the Order of Secrets - Nina Hervok - with the loss of her mate, has become distant with little interest in regards to the state of war Relic Lore has been in for the better part of a thousand years. She is but an ever-watchful spectator, keeping her coven well-kept and sound within her domain hidden away in the Thicket of Secrets. Since her departure from the Manor at Willow Ridge, she owes Elettra Archer her loyalty, but does little to help or hinder either side in the war.

Triell Tainn.

At the head of the movement against the reign of vampires is Triell Tainn, the last remaining heir of his family within Relic Lore. The expanse of land that surrounds his home - Oakheart Lodge - within the Spectral Woods is one of two werewolf command posts on the eastern end of the realm. Without the aid of his sister, Borlla, and her husband, Phineas, he would not be where he is today; though it has been said that his tactics in combat and warfare are, to this day, unrivaled.

Maksim Baranski & Kisla Tainn.

On the western end of Relic Lore Triell's niece, Kisla, now also holds a fragment of power beside Maksim Baranski, a man of politics who has, since his arrival, successfully led a number of anti-vampire campaigns. While his following consists of mostly werewolves, he holds no grudge against the few renegade vampires who have joined his cause.

Borlla Argyris-Tainn & Phineas Argyris.

Just north of Oakheart Lodge lies the Magnolia Church, a monastery and refuge run and funded by Borlla Argyris-Tainn and Phineas Argyris. Since the loss of their first-born son, the couple has been reserved and has withdrawn all support for an all-out war between the races. As per Borlla's request, however, they still lend their allegiance to Triell, her brother, in hopes of at least preserving the survival of their kind. They offer their home and land as a safe haven and place of healing for victims and veterans of the war.

Minka Leigh, Ash Hervok, & Tokino Lagina

Minka Leigh, the head of Whisper Coven, has only just recently risen to power. However, instead of waging war against werewolves beyond her borders, she - with her mate Tokino - has started a civil war against her co-leader, Ash Hervok...

We, at Ruins of Wildwood, appreciate and thank you for your understanding, and we all hope you continue to enjoy RoW as much as we do! Happy Spring!

BWP Update

Nope.. winter is leaving! It's time to wrap up the winter BWP including famine and strong snow storms. Thank you to everyone for participating so well, and make sure to finish up your threads and any threads correlating to the BWP should be recorded here. These threads will then be placed in the library guide thata cts as our BWP archive.

From today on, it is safe to say that the weather/temperature listed beneath our online list is the perfect guide for what should be expected in RoW. It can be assumed that some of the snow has melted, and in turn, the Mountain of Dire is once more passable — though if you want to torture your characters further you can always claim small snow slides, etc. ;) The herds are also migrating back to Relic Lore and the health bar maximum has been adjusted accordingly.

Breeding Season Threads

Breeding season is almost at a close — any wolf planning to have a litter this year will need to have their threads completed by end of day on March 31. We would also like to remind our future RoW parents to submit their litter info to the Spirit of Wildwood account. This information should include whatever aspects of the adoptable cub you want to share with your fellow role-players; past years have given names, appearances, etc. Specific requests for adoption processes should also be noted. We release the puppy adoptions in one whole thread at the same time, so failure to get your information in will hold up everyone else. :(

OTM Voting & Survey

It's that time of month again to vote for the OTM's! Please do so on the Fun & Games page. Also, if you have not done so yet, we highly encourage our members to fill out our survey before April 1st.

OOC Avatars

On a final note, if you have an OOC avatar created by our talented Grey, could you please save the image and upload to your own hosting? The urls for these avatars is saving strangely on the site, and in turn, if staff need to edit an account, we are not able to as the code does not accept the ooc avatar url in the Admin Control Panel. Thanks everyone! :)

Please be sure to register as soon as possible to help the staff keep track of our expected number of puppies this year.

RoW Council Applications

The next RoW council will begin their term on April 1st. So if you're interested, please send your application to the SoW account by March 20th. We have a lot of awesome members we would love to see participate, so please consider joining the team!

Lowest Voting

If you haven't, please let us know how you feel about the Lowest Rank/Role. Right now, we're looking at a tie, so the voting has been extended for an additional 3 days. If you have comments or suggestions about it, we'd love to hear them!

Site Wide Survey

Finally, we would like to encourage all members to participate in a Site Wide Survey. It has been a long time since our last general site survey, and we'd like to hear your thoughts. The survey is completely anonymous and has 17 questions. You will be able to edit your responses up until April 1st. Help us improve RoW for you by taking the time to answer our survey.

  Pack Creation & BWP Update
Posted by: Phineas - Mar 11, 2014, 01:16 PM - Forum: News Desk - No Replies

[dohtml]

BWP Update

March has come to Relic Lore once more.. this time, revealing more promise in its wake. The storms have seemed to slow down, if not stopping entirely, allowing the sky to give way to blue once more. The temperatures are beginning to rise, though there is no sight of the herds returning to the Lore just yet. The woes of the residents are not over yet -- with the melting of the snow, flooding has begun to occur. Packs in lower elevation and water areas should be careful.

Pack Creation Update

To offer a more solidified answer to what staff believe the game can sustain in terms of pack numbers, a code has been added to the Game Stats page. We would like to remind our members that pack creation is not necessarily 'first come first serve' — if more than one pack is attempting to form, and more than one application comes in, we will base the decision on who gets to have their pack based on numerous factors, including the process you are taking to meet the requirements of pack creation, activity level, realism for pack land creation, and how reliable you have been throughout the game.

This isn't meant to discourage anyone — we simply want to give insight to how we make the final decisions in the end. We would also like to highlight the opportunity to challenge current pack leaders. With the new change to the fight stat systems, fights should be more fair for an outcome. Just because someone 'created' or 'leads' a pack doesn't mean you can't challenge, and it shouldn't be seen as anything more than an IC chance to develop characters. OoC disgruntlement on the matter has no place here at RoW. :)

  Fight System Adjustments + OTMs

Fight System Adjustment

Whoa, three updates in a row?! Your staff has been very busy, so expect more announcements over the upcoming weeks. To help facilitate that, I've gone ahead and fixed the alert notification for announcements - you will now be actually linked to the announcement thread instead of a missing page thread.

First off, I want to congratulate Rachel (@Phineas) for being named February's Member of the Month and @Hollow for being named February's Wolf of the Month! Congratulations as well to Vickie, Lightning, and Grey for being the month's top posters. Nice work everybody! To celebrate our new OTMs, Bryony and I spent some time yesterday adding back in the full records of the previous OTMs, which you can see here.

Note, the OTM voting list only includes people who have made posts during that month, so keep that in mind if you decide to vote early!

Fighting System Adjustments

Most of you are fairly familiar with our Fighting System, a stat based system that helps give some complexity to fights between characters. One of its biggest flaws has always been that characters with high amounts of LP were essentially untouchable because of their huge HP stat. After some discussion and some help from Kydnt, Kydnt's boyfriend, and Sarah, the system has now been adjusted so that LP does not increase to such a drastic degree. LP is now calculated using a logarithm to help balance out the overall HP stat.

For those who are interested, the new formula is: log3(x^7)-10. Which means that wolves with the following LP values with have the following Stat:

-- Wolf with 300 LP: 26
-- Wolf with 1000 LP: 34
-- Wolf with 3000 LP: 41

We believe that this will help make fights a bit more fair, while at the same time acknowledging the hard work put in by players who accumulate so much LP.

Another minor change that we're making is when you roll to determine if you hit or miss, you will now be rolled on a d10 instead of d20. This is to increase the opportunities for misses and help to balance out fight stats between opponents who are more or less equal to one another statistically.

These changes are being made on a trial basis. This trial will run through the month of March and will begin immediately. In April, the staff will reevaluate, with member input, the successes and failures of these changes. We want to keep improving for you guys, so help us test out this system and let us know what you think!

Reminder

Related to the fight system, we want to remind everyone that Player A should not log on one day to find that they have been tagged in a fight request. The fight system was meant to be used in the event that an OOC agreement could not be made beforehand, and we've been informed a few times by people who have been surprised by a fight being initiated without any prior contact. To ensure that there an agreement to the use system from both sides, staff who roll for fights will be asking for confirmation from all involved parties before doing any rolls. So please be courteous to your fellow RPers!

Spring is Coming!

Spring is on its way to Relic Lore. Want to help ring in the new season? Why don't you consider submitting a skin?

  BWP Hunt Threads -- Attempt #2 :)
Posted by: Phineas - Mar 01, 2014, 09:30 PM - Forum: News Desk - Replies (5)

[dohtml]

Hunting Opportunity

Okay! The staff have taken in people's suggestions and have done the following: the old BWP Hunt Opportunity thread on the West side has had a sudden snow storm strike. White out conditions are forcing the wolves back, and the elk has escaped. Everyone has a chance to get in a closing post before the 4th before the thread will be archived.

Two new Hunting Opportunities have opened up for the West side: found here and here. The East side Hunt Opportunity is now open and won't be restarted.. but must follow the guidelines below as well as the West side.

Thread Guidelines
- Your character can only participate in one. It is suggested packs decide together where they would like to take food from. It is also suggested they hunt at the closest prey to them.
- Two OOC days can pass per the first round (announced by the SoW account) before characters can reply again.
- Staff will be playing the Spirit of Wildwood account as the prey RE to interpret posts and determine what attacks are made, etc.
- After 3 rounds, no new characters should join. This gives players almost a week to have their character jump in for participation.
- Powerplaying and godmoding is not accepted at RoW. Please take your character's age, experience, LP in to consideration before posting. Your wolf who suddenly appears in round 3 won't run faster to the prey than a wolf who has been there since the beginning, etc.
- These threads will be huge. If this upsets you, we suggest you do not join.
- If fights break out between wolves, try to discuss OOCly how they could play out. Some people might not want an entire pack jumping at their character at once -- common courtesy comes to play here.
- Finally.. just try to have fun?! It's a game, and it's meant for character development. :)

We've also included, for your enjoyment, discussion threads where you guys can come to add your notes on the thread or put your post summaries so people can get a better idea of what's going on. None of this is mandatory, just meant to clear up any confusions that may develop.

  Pack Creation: Heads Up

Pack Creation

Staff wanted to give a quick announcement to everyone regarding pack creation and where Ruins of Wildwood currently stands for game growth at the moment.

Ruins of Wildwood is a large game. That being said, we currently have 7 packs, only of which a few have a decent amount of members. Because of this, staff will have to be particular in what (if any) packs are created, until the IC population grows once more.

This isn't a ban on new packs — it's simply a precaution to our members who are considering this option to work with staff and to take in to consideration that their application might be temporarily denied. If there is anything we can help answer, please do not hesitate to contact any of the staff members!

Random Events

Just a quick update to let everybody know they should check out the Random Events I fixed a bug today, so they were all updated, but alerts were not sent out (that has now been fixed as well). Hopefully it should be fine again the next time around!

I am also in the process of fixing up the activity check plugin, so don't fret too much about it if your post count for this activity check gets reset.

Thanks everybody for your patience as I work on the bug list!
